Breastfeeding Tips for New Moms

Recently breastfeeding was considered to be old-fashioned. But nowadays it has become a popular option among new moms, because they accept that nursing is the best way to feed a new-born child.

There are a lot of reasons why to breastfeed:

  • Breast milk consists of about 100 nutritional components which are absent in cow’s milk as well as in factory-made milk;
  • Breast milk provides the best possible infant food;
  • The composition of breast milk varies from day to day, according to the infant’s needs;
  • Breast milk contains less protein and phosphorus than any other kind of milk and has much better assimilation;
  • Breastfed babies have a lower risk of allergies, asthma, diarrhea, respiratory and ear infections;
  • The sucking action used in breastfeeding improves the development of facial muscles, jawbones, and palate;
  • Breastfeeding reduces risk of osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, ovarian and breast cancers;
  • Breastfeeding helps mothers return to their pre-pregnancy weight;
  • Breastfeeding helps to build a strong physical and emotional bond between mother and baby.

Breastfeeding Tips for New Moms

  1. Relax and choose a comfortable position;
  2. Your thumb and index fingers should grasp your areola (darker portion of the breast) and your nipple should touch the mouth corner of your baby;
  3. As soon as your baby opens his/her mouth, lift him a little more until his lower jaw attaches to the breast. You should not try to fit you nipple into closed baby’s mouth;
  4. Baby's gums should completely bypass the nipple and should cover all or most of the areola behind the nipple;
  5. An infant should squeeze the nipple with his gums to extract the milk;
  6. Your breast should not block infant’s breathing;
  7. Do not let your baby hold your nipple after he has stopped suction. But do not remove your baby from your breast until the suction is released;
  8. Break the suction by slipping your little finger in the corner of your baby’s mouth between the gums;

What to Eat While Breastfeeding

Each day breastfeeding woman should try to drink milk, kefir, soured milk (no less than 0,5 l ), eat curd cheese (50-100 g), meat (about 200 g), vegetables (600-700 g), eggs, butter, fruits (no less than 300-500 g), bread. It is good to eat products high in vitamin E.

In 10-15 minutes before breastfeeding process it is recommended to drink a cup of milk or tee with milk. And it is good to drink during the day (day norm is 2-2,5l).

There should be enough calcium and iron.

Coffee and alcohol dehydrate the body and are not recommended to use while breastfeeding.

It is not forbidden to eat something sweet, but you should do this in moderation. Beware of fried potato, white bread and other food rich in calories.
